Project R.E.V.I.V.A.L.
(Restoring Ego and Virtue In Visions of African Legacy):
Celebrating the Beauty of the African Diaspora through Media, Music,
Dance, and Literature

My platform is called Project R.E.V.I.V.A.L (Restoring Ego & Virtue In Visions of African Legacy): Celebrating the beauty of the
African Diaspora through Media, Music, Dance, and Literature.  With my platform I want to help promote the positive
contributions that people of African descent have made to society.  Informing the Black community, as well as, other
communities of the vibrant cultural history of Africa can instill a sense of pride in Black youth.  Knowledge about the youth's
heritage presents an alternative to the unfavorable influences that at times persist in areas such as the media.  Additionally, this
knowledge and pride can help protect against feelings of low self-worth and low self-esteem.  It is vital to address these
feelings because they often transform into poor body image, depression, negative health habits, poor eating and decreased
physical activity--all potential risk factors for diabetes and obesity.  Learning about one's cultural heritage to increase self-worth
can help all minority populations.

So here's a brief summary of what I plan to do as part of my platform:

MEDIA: Project REVIVAL will focus attention on the people and organizations who are positive role models for Black
youth and/or strive to present a positive depiction of Black people in the media.  Project REVIVAL will also encourage
the youth to create media that is an expression and reflection of themselves in a positive way.  In addition, I will use
various forms of media to promote the essence of Project REVIVAL.  (To request a copy of my four minute digital story
(similar to a mini-movie), "The Opportunity," email me at missblackarizona2007@yahoo.com)

MUSIC and DANCE: Project REVIVAL will highlight the contributions and influences of African descendants on
music and dance all over the world.  Project REVIVAL will encourage youth to embrace the positive aspects of all
music and use dance to promote our culture not destroy it. Music and dance will be used as a form of cultural
expression, exercise and therapy.

LITERATURE:  Project REVIVAL will promote the contributions of African descendants in literature and will educate
Black children on their heritage.   Project REVIVAL will encourage youth to REVIVE the oral tradition in the creation of
their own literature.  Project REVIVAL will work to develop a Project REVIVAL curriculum/presentations that can be used
in schools and in homes.

In conclusion, as I recapture my own roots by embarking on a Sankofa pilgrimage, a sense of pride emerges that overtakes the
negative stereotypes of people of African descent.  All children should feel the same sense of pride and accomplishment.
When we visit and compete in The Gambia, I will engage the Gambian people and absorb as much knowledge as I can about
the history, music, arts, dance and traditions of their culture as well as help “myth bust” about images of Black people in the U.
S.  As Miss Black Arizona, U.S.A., it is my goal to create a passion and drive in others that will embrace the diversity of our
African ancestors, promote the positive contributions of the motherland and instill a sense of pride and dignity in all Africa’s
children throughout the Diaspora.
